Summer Academic Enrichment Program

Now accepting applications for 2024!

Killian Oaks Academy’s Summer Academic Enrichment Program is designed to strengthen skills in reading, writing, and mathematics within a small classroom setting of 6 to 8 students per class. Our objective is to maximize students’ skills through a comprehensive and structured academic program that reinforces and enhances the core content areas. We identify the areas that may be affecting skill acquisition and develop personalized and customized programs that heighten the students’ skills and abilities. Our program is explicit, intensive, and multi-sensory. Our goal is to inspire the curiosity of learning, help students improve in areas of weakness, and shine in areas of strength and interest.

Students possess a range of skills and abilities and achieve mastery at different rates. Providing each learner with the specific support they need to attain their personal best is what sets Killian Oaks Academy apart from other programs. Through our research-based and proven methodologies, students transform into successful lifelong learners.

Reading: The objective of our Orton-Gillingham based reading program is to enhance our students’ phonemic awareness, phonics, reading fluency, and comprehension skills through the application of multiple reading strategies that develop their ability to construct meaning from text. Our approach is multi-sensory, phonetic, and sequential, and we target areas that require further development through explicit instruction. Our multi-sensory approach stimulates and develops the students’ symbol imagery. Through symbol imagery the students’ ability to visualize the identity and sequence of letters in words is enhanced. Reading and word-attack skills are further developed through our structured literacy program. Targeted personalized attention allows us to tap into the students’ natural abilities while addressing those areas that benefit from reinforcement.  Within a small setting students begin to flourish as readers.

Language Skills: Language skills instruction encompasses the writing process, spelling, and grammar, while reinforcing penmanship. The approach is developmental and targets areas that benefit from support. In writing, students discover their voice as they develop creative writing, narrative, and descriptive masterpieces.  The key traits of writing are reviewed: ideas, organization, voice, word choice, sentence fluency, conventions, and presentation. Students are guided through the steps of the writing process including brainstorming / prewriting, writing the initial rough draft, editing / revising, and publishing. We commence with a well-written sentence and evolve into a paragraph or multi-paragraph composition, based on the students’ skills. We provide explicit instruction of spelling rules and the conventions of grammar. A curricular framework encompassing the students’ writing styles is utilized to determine the areas that require reinforcement and targeted support.

Mathematics: Mathematics instruction focuses on reviewing, building, and enhancing students’ math skills. Instruction in math is enriching and individualized while focused on building students’ foundational skills.  Through differentiated instruction and a multi-sensory and multi-method approach to problem solving, students build confidence and greater proficiency. An initial assessment is administered to determine current mastery levels and targeted assignments are provided to enhance the students’ skills. We provide instruction ranging from computation to increasingly advanced skills within a small group setting. The goal is to motivate students in an encouraging and nurturing environment, while at the same time challenging them to attain their personal best and ultimate success.
