Our History

Killian Oaks Academy began its existence as the House of Learning in 1968. Since then, The Academy has grown to its present position of prominence, and has been at the forefront in implementing educational innovations that deal with the unique needs of students. As a result, The Academy has become recognized as one of the finest of its kind in the South.

In the early nineties, the House of Learning became Killian Oaks Academy under the leadership of Mercedes Ricón. Ms. Ricón serves on the board of the National Independent Private School Association (NIPSA) as the Vice President in charge of accreditation for private schools on the East coast of the United States. Through NIPSA, she has lead accreditation teams both nationally and internationally. She has served as a board member of the Association of Independent Schools of Florida (AISF) for over twenty years. Through this organization Ms. Ricón has lead teams that have visited and accredited private schools throughout Florida. As a board member of the Independent Schools of South Florida (ISSF), Ms. Ricón has organized teacher training seminars, created collaborative opportunities with other South Florida Schools, and has helped organize the Stars Awards Luncheon which celebrates and recognizes the achievement of students throughout South Florida. Ms. Ricón has also helped to design the educational program at the Leadership Learning Center at San Juan Bosco. Through her charitable efforts, many underprivileged children are discovering personal success. Her passion is to help children discover their path to success, and her lifelong mission is being realized every day.
